What happened to Charlie Chaplin body?

Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin was a famous comedian, filmmaker and composer who became famous during the silent film era. Through his character, The Tramp, he became a global symbol and one of the most important figures in the history of the film industry. His career spanned more than 75 years from his childhood in Victoria to a year before his death. During this time he was both ridiculed and debated. Chaplin eventually died at his home on Lake Geneva, Switzerland, at Christmas 1977, and his fourth wife and eight children buried him in a quiet cemetery next to his home. He dedicated his life to comedy, but his afterlife was like a horror movie with a lost corpse.

Through his character, The Tramp, he became a global symbol and one of the most important figures in the history of the film industry. His career spanned more than 75 years from his childhood in Victoria to a year before his death. During this time he was both ridiculed and debated. Chaplin eventually died at his home on Lake Geneva, Switzerland, at Christmas 1977, and his fourth wife and eight children buried him in a quiet cemetery next to his home. But a few months after Charlie's funeral, his wife, Oona, received a call from the Swiss police. A voice was heard saying: Your husband body has disappeared. It was as if Chaplin's grave had been opened and his coffin had been pulled out. Not only cinema fans but also critics were shocked. What happened to Chaplin's body? Did his supporters steal his body to bury in his homeland, London? But a few days later, Oona answers another phone call.


A man with an Eastern European accent is heard claiming that Chaplin's body is in front of him, and a few days later Oona receives a photograph. Photo of Chaplin's coffin. In the next call, the unidentified man asks for $ 600,000 to return Chaplin's body. He even threatens to kidnap Chaplin's children. Police are launching an extensive investigation. Patrols are carried out throughout the city. Even the entrances and exits of the city are tightly controlled. But Chaplin's body and his thief are never found. So they control Oona's phone. And they put a policeman on duty for all the telephone booths in the city. Until two people are arrested on suspicion of stealing Chaplin's body at a public telephone booth near Lausanne. Two car mechanic named Roman Wardas, of Poland, and Gantscho Ganev, of Bulgaria.

Two Eastern European refugees in dire financial straits decided to copy a similar incident that took place in Italy. They took police to the place where Chaplin's body was buried, 10 miles above his own tomb. Finally, Chaplin is buried again in the same place, but this time in a concrete grave.
