Researchers at both Cornell and Pennsylvania Universities created the robotic fish by introducing and using a new bloodstream system. To simulate the organism s blood supply system, the researchers filled it with artificial blood, which was an electrolyte solution. This solution has two functions: one as a propulsion system that moves the robot into the water; the other as a power source.
Using artificial blood, the researchers found that their robotic fish was able to swim in the water for 36 hours, about 8 times more than a similarly designed but bloodless robot.
According to James Pickfull of the University of Pennsylvania: The solution in our artificial blood supply system stores chemical energy and we can use it to power the robotic fish. As the pumping action is done on the body of the fish, the solution flows and moves the robot. The design of this blood system is designed to maintain both agility and robotic performance over a long time.
